Choosing Liminal Mind: The Meaning Behind My Practice Name

When I first started my practice, I knew the name had to reflect something deeply personal and meaningful. I wanted a name that would resonate with people who often feel confused, stuck, or lost in their lives. After much thought, I chose Liminal Mind because it captures the essence of those moments when we find ourselves in-between stages, unsure of what comes next but ready for change.

What Does Liminal Mean?

The word liminal comes from the Latin word limen, meaning threshold. It describes a state of being on the edge or at a boundary between two different phases. In psychology and anthropology, liminal spaces represent times when people are neither here nor there—they are in-between identities, roles, or stages of life.

This concept felt like a perfect metaphor for many of my clients’ experiences. People often come to me feeling confused or stuck because they are navigating a liminal space in their lives. They might be transitioning careers, ending relationships, or facing personal challenges that leave them feeling lost and uncertain.

My Personal Connection to the Name

I chose Liminal Mind not just because of the word’s meaning but because it reflects my own journey. There was a time when I felt completely lost - caught between who I was and who I wanted to become. I was stuck in a job that didn’t fulfill me, unsure how to move forward. That period of uncertainty was difficult, but it was also a powerful space for growth.

Naming my practice Liminal Mind is a way to honor that experience and to remind clients that being in-between is not a place to fear. It is a place to explore, reflect, and prepare for the next chapter.

Why This Name Matters to Clients

Many people who seek support feel confused about their next steps. They might feel stuck in patterns or overwhelmed by choices. The name Liminal Mind signals that this practice is a safe space for those moments of uncertainty.

Here’s what the name offers:

  • Validation: It acknowledges that feeling lost or in-between is normal and part of life’s process.

  • Hope: It suggests that these moments are temporary and can lead to transformation.

  • Support: It invites clients to explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Examples of Liminal Moments in Practice

Clients often describe their situations as liminal without knowing the term. For example:

  • A client who recently left a long-term relationship felt confused about their identity and future.

  • Another client was stuck in a career transition, unsure which path to take.

  • Someone facing a major health diagnosis felt lost between fear and acceptance.

In each case, the liminal space was a place of discomfort but also of possibility. My role is to guide clients through these moments, helping them find clarity and strength.

How I Support Clients in Liminal Spaces

Working with people in liminal states requires patience and understanding. Here are some ways I help clients move forward:

  • Active listening to understand their unique experience without rushing to solutions.

  • Encouraging self-reflection to identify what they truly want and value.

  • Helping them set small, achievable goals to regain a sense of control.

  • Providing tools to manage anxiety and uncertainty, such as mindfulness and grounding techniques.

These approaches create a supportive environment where clients can explore their confused or lost feelings and gradually find direction.
